A Spring in Our Step

Here at our mountain forest paradise of Bellevue Forest Reserve, we are just buzzing with excitement at the advent of spring. While we love ALL seasons, there is something so fresh and wonderful about the change from winter – like a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis, our landscape starts to show the brilliant early buds and leaves that herald a complete makeover.

The first green flushes start to pop against the dust-coloured backdrop. Returning migrant birdsong fills the air. There’s a sharp, fresh tang in the morning air and a building warmth that chases off the morning chill earlier each day. Animals are getting frisky as it is mating season for many. The luminous, translucent green of brand-new leaves and the tiniest hints of new buds waiting to blossom…All around us, signs of renewal and rebirth. LIFE!

We are also thrilled to be welcoming back more international guests as travel (well, the entire world, really) begins to normalise. It feels like the LONGEST time, but just like spring, the welcome signs are there. And we are so ready!

In preparation for the re-emergence of a wave of leisure travellers seeking the great outdoors after far too long, we have been spring-cleaning our offerings too. The Elephants Lodge has been scrubbed down and spruced up, sparklingly fresh to herald the return of treasured repeat guests and welcoming new ones to our special space.

The interior of the Eastern Cape remains one of the country’s most outstanding naturally endowed destinations, untouched by the rampant development and urban sprawl of larger centres. Sleepy hollow we may be – but who doesn’t relish, peace and quiet and the chance for really deep sleep! Surrounded by a plethora of birds and wildlife, of multi-layered forests, mountains and rugged valleys. Perched on the edge of the divide between the distant coast and the ‘platteland’ of the Little Karoo – there’s a magical cocktail of beauty and tranquillity here unlike anywhere else.
